You nailed it, Meinolf. I was just going in the complexities of 2003 SBS and it was as simple as a subnet mask mismatch.

Check the subnet mask of your clients: 255.252.255.0
Server use 255.255.255.0
Change it and run ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns on all machines which are wrong.
