I believe this particular problem has nothing to do with the sidebar, no
doubt the side bar is switched off, i had the same problem. The
resolution is to apply an image to the desktop that fits your
resolution, it seems when vista tries to resize the image to fit a black
line appears. Reduce the size of your image ie: to 800x600 and then set
as desktop wallpaper and you should be fine.

I'm glad the ubuntu team is working hard. That was the distro I was gonna
go
with (it was either ubuntu or Fedora) if not for 1 simple fact. Linux has
next to no hardware support. That was its downfall in my attempted
conversion
to the linux world.
Rubbish! Linux distributions in general have MORE hardware support than
Windows, at least until Windows 7 came along...

Oh don't worry - there were plenty of others examples I encountered in my
attempted conversion. But i've already addressed that aspect of my statement
in my previous post so yeah, your argument has already been made moot.

Someone who labels someone else's practical and logical opinion as
"rubbish!"
Should not preach to others about writing "silly statements". Hypocrite
much?
Perhaps the only over embellishment I made was about "next to no". But
when
you can't get get just 1 simple printer talking properly with the OS
That's just one out of thousands then.....that does NOT constitute "no
hardware support".

So what do you call a small minority within an even smaller minority? (i.e.
the entire linux market). We must be going microscopic!
Oh and luck has nothing to do with the fact that manufacturers are not
supporting an OS that has very little market share and thus is a poor
investment on their part (with the possible exception of servers, but then -
how many servers are connected to a printer). Its called economics. But I
shouldn't be surprised, not everyone is endowed with the ability to think
analytically.
...tough luck!
And for funsies - one of the pieces of hardware was a canon mp class printer
- very esoteric indeed.

A major worldwide manufacturer is notorious for not supporting linux
invalidates my point how? Any 'research' taken that somehow indicates this
would only reaffirm everything i've been saying.
But I shouldn't get carried away - it's clear you haven't properly read any
of the above posts. Had you done so you would have read the words: "one
of...". To give other examples; My webcam, wireless mouse and keyboard and of
course the laptop I was trying to install it on. Really useful to have an OS
that doesn't accurately report battery levels or viably manages wireless
connectivity or hardware buttons. Oh and lets not forget that only recently
has installing graphics drivers not been a massive chore. Ubuntu's done well
with their repos on that one now thankfully (no thanks to the manufacturers).
Sad part of that is that we're talking about just 1 distro - the problem
still persists in most others.
But all the aforementioned indicates just one thing: Linux is not a
practical solution to the average user. Which was my original point! Don't
think however, I wouldn't like it to be (all my music is in ogg format!).

|
|
Just to go back to the origin of this thread.
I have loaded the Freecom software that came with the Freecom 500GB
external hard disk on 3 machines using Vista and in all instances it
corrupted either the DVD or the USB ports. It was never clear whether
the drivers were corrupted since the Vista Driver Manager reported the
drivers as correct. The problem appeared to be that the operating system
could not load them.
The only solution was to re-install the operating system from scratch
and rebuild the systems.
Both MESH and Lenovo technical suspport resorted to this recovery
option.
