Hello Meinolf,
I think we're gaining some ground, but still not working right yet. When I
do a "ipconfig /all" on the client, it is now showing the router's IP
address as it should, but I still can't get to the internet on the client.
I've noticed a couple of things in the server that may or may not be
significant:
1. There is a blue exclamation mark "!" showing by IPv4 under the DHCP
Server
2. Although the forwarders are set as you described earlier, I don't see
them listed anywhere unless I right click on the server name.

Hello Meinolf,
OK, here's where we stand.
I've extended the scope to five IPs (227-232)
No exclusion area listed even after refresh, so I skipped
that
part.
209..... DNS listings removed from the server as well as the
client.
Forwarders were already set. Must have been picked up from
the
router.
I did the ipconfig series (all, release, renew, all) on the
client. Even rebooted the client.
Still no internet.
NOTE: I did not kill the DHCP service on the router as the
rest of the company is still logged in.

Hi Meinolf,
I really appreciate the info you're coming back with. As
you may guess, my networking abilities are limited to
hands-on learning.
Please clarify the following points:
remove the dns 209............... Is this from the
server nic, the client, or both?
On all computers NIC'S in your domain.
"setup a forwarder" Please explain.
On the server open the DNS management console, go to Start,
Run and type "dnsmgmt.msc" without the quotes. In the
console add the server if not displayed. If you see the
servername, mark it, rightclick and choose properties. On
the opened window choose the FORWARDERS tab and here fill
in the 209.x.x.x addresses, doesn't matter which order. If
the options are greyed out, open the + and go to the
Forward lookup zones, here you can see a "." zone (root
zone, only used from DNS root servers), rightclick the "."
and delete it. Then close the DNS management console and
open it again. Now you can add the addresses to the
FORWARDERS tab, it will not longer be greyed out.
Where do I exclude the unused IPs?
Open the DHCP console, choose your created scope and open
the +. Here you can see Exclusions, scope options, leases.
Rightclick Exclusions and choose add exclusion range or
similar, on the popped up window you can either specify a
range or a single ip address.
I could probably stumble around
and find it, but it's easier to ask and prove I'm stupid
as
opposed
to
locking everyone out and having them tell me.

Hello RR2,
For the scope, use more then one ip, make a range of 5
and
when
the
ip is
leased from the client, exclude the other ones.
As said before remove the 209.253.113.10 and
209.253.113.18
from
the
DNS
configuration on the NIC's and setup a forwarder as
described.
Please post your scope options also.

Here's the steup I tried. I limited this to one test
client when no one else was in the office so other
logins were avoided.

issue
one
IP)
IPv6 unchecked

255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
DNS
192.168.1.2
209.253.113.10
209.253.113.18
Router (IP is 192.168.1.1)
DHCP disabled.
Client
Obtain IP address automatically
Use following DNS
192.168.1.2
209.253.113.10
209.253.113.18
On client I reseased and then refreshed ipconfig. The
correct
DNS
showed up
under ipconfig /all, but default gateway was blank. No
internet.
I also ran the same routine with the DNS on the client
set
to
automatic.
I know I'm doing something wrong somewhere along the
line.

Hello RR2,
Did you authorize the DHCP server and activate the
scope? If the DHCP scope options are setup correctly
with domain internal DNS server and default gateway,
the router ip from the LAN run ipconfig /renew on a
client or reboot it. It should get the correc tsettings
from the DHCP server. Additional you have to configure
the DNS server from the DC, which normally will be
installed during promotion of the first DC, with a
forwarder ip address. This ip is the DNS server from
your ISP and has to be set on the server properties in
the DNS management console under the forwarders tab. On
all machines in the domain you have to use only the LAN
internal DNS server no external/public ip address.

That would be my desire, but I'm haveing problems
there too. I tried changing to the server for DHCP
service, but couldn't get to the internet. For some
reason, the DHCP server on the domain server isn't
passing the default gateway to the clients. Since our
previous server (before the crash) was setup with the
router serving DHCP, I left it that way from the
beginning. The old server was an NT-4 server and all
worked well.

We've recently installed Windows Server 2008 and are
now experiencing some problems with application
hangups.
The server is a domain server with a few shared
files and folders. No applications are installed on
the server.
Periodically, someone updating one of the shared
files from a client PC will cause a lockup. The
event viewer on the client PC shows Application
Hang. There are no events showing on the server for
the time of the "incident". All shares on the server
lock at that time and the only way out is to reboot
the server.
Additional information that may or may not be
related. Our router is acting as DHCP server for the
entire LAN. The DHCP server on the domain server is
disabled through services and unauthorized.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing the
lockups?

The IP is fresh. In fact, I changed out my test workstation and ran through
the whole IP config routines just to make sure there was nothing wrong with
the box I was using for the test. The new one can still not get on the
internet. The workstaion I'm on is using the router as DHCP server. If I
disable the DCHP in the router, nothing gets on.
Please clarify the settings I should use for my nic on the server.
Currently showing for IP : 192.168.1.2 ; 255.255.255.0; 192.168.1.1 For
DNS: 192.168.1.2 all others are blank. On the workstaion, it's set for
automatic all the way.

If the workstation ip is expired, the lease time is exceeded, delete the
ip on the DHCP server "address leases" and run ipconfig /renew on the
workstation.
The forwarders ip is only used form the DNS server, all domain members
will ask the domain DNS server for the www.whatever.com address, if the
server doesn't know it, it will automatically forward ther request to the
ip addresses under the forwarders tab. So you will not see the addresses
anywhere else.

Hi Meinolf,
I really appreciate the info you're coming back with.
As you may guess, my networking abilities are limited to
hands-on learning.
Please clarify the following points:
remove the dns 209............... Is this from the
server nic, the client, or both?
On all computers NIC'S in your domain.
"setup a forwarder" Please explain.
On the server open the DNS management console, go to
Start, Run and type "dnsmgmt.msc" without the quotes. In
the console add the server if not displayed. If you see
the servername, mark it, rightclick and choose
properties. On the opened window choose the FORWARDERS
tab and here fill in the 209.x.x.x addresses, doesn't
matter which order. If the options are greyed out, open
the + and go to the Forward lookup zones, here you can
see a "." zone (root zone, only used from DNS root
servers), rightclick the "." and delete it. Then close
the DNS management console and open it again. Now you can
add the addresses to the FORWARDERS tab, it will not
longer be greyed out.
Where do I exclude the unused IPs?
Open the DHCP console, choose your created scope and open
the +. Here you can see Exclusions, scope options,
leases. Rightclick Exclusions and choose add exclusion
range or similar, on the popped up window you can either
specify a range or a single ip address.
I could probably stumble around
and find it, but it's easier to ask and prove I'm stupid
as
opposed
to
locking everyone out and having them tell me.

Hello RR2,
For the scope, use more then one ip, make a range of 5
and
when
the
ip is
leased from the client, exclude the other ones.
As said before remove the 209.253.113.10 and
209.253.113.18
from
the
DNS
configuration on the NIC's and setup a forwarder as
described.
Please post your scope options also.

Here's the steup I tried. I limited this to one test
client when no one else was in the office so other
logins were avoided.
Server:
DHCP service running and authorized.

issue
one
IP)
IPv6 unchecked
IPv4
IPs

255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
DNS
192.168.1.2
209.253.113.10
209.253.113.18
Router (IP is 192.168.1.1)
DHCP disabled.
Client
Obtain IP address automatically
Use following DNS
192.168.1.2
209.253.113.10
209.253.113.18
On client I reseased and then refreshed ipconfig. The
correct
DNS
showed up
under ipconfig /all, but default gateway was blank.
No
internet.
I also ran the same routine with the DNS on the client
set
to
automatic.
I know I'm doing something wrong somewhere along the
line.

Hello RR2,
Did you authorize the DHCP server and activate the
scope? If the DHCP scope options are setup correctly
with domain internal DNS server and default gateway,
the router ip from the LAN run ipconfig /renew on a
client or reboot it. It should get the correc
tsettings from the DHCP server. Additional you have
to configure the DNS server from the DC, which
normally will be installed during promotion of the
first DC, with a forwarder ip address. This ip is the
DNS server from your ISP and has to be set on the
server properties in the DNS management console under
the forwarders tab. On all machines in the domain you
have to use only the LAN internal DNS server no
external/public ip address.

That would be my desire, but I'm haveing problems
there too. I tried changing to the server for DHCP
service, but couldn't get to the internet. For some
reason, the DHCP server on the domain server isn't
passing the default gateway to the clients. Since
our previous server (before the crash) was setup
with the router serving DHCP, I left it that way
from the beginning. The old server was an NT-4
server and all worked well.

We've recently installed Windows Server 2008 and
are now experiencing some problems with
application hangups.
The server is a domain server with a few shared
files and folders. No applications are installed
on the server.
Periodically, someone updating one of the shared
files from a client PC will cause a lockup. The
event viewer on the client PC shows Application
Hang. There are no events showing on the server
for the time of the "incident". All shares on the
server lock at that time and the only way out is
to reboot the server.
Additional information that may or may not be
related. Our router is acting as DHCP server for
the entire LAN. The DHCP server on the domain
server is disabled through services and
unauthorized.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing the
lockups?

Here's another thought.
Is there an issue with the default gateway being a lower IP number than the
DNS. I wouldn't think so, but then I've been wrong once or twice before in
my life.

Hello Meinolf,
I think we're gaining some ground, but still not working right yet.
When I do a "ipconfig /all" on the client, it is now showing the
router's IP address as it should, but I still can't get to the
internet on the client.
I've noticed a couple of things in the server that may or may not be
significant:
1. There is a blue exclamation mark "!" showing by IPv4 under the
DHCP
Server
2. Although the forwarders are set as you described earlier, I don't
see
them listed anywhere unless I right click on the server name.

Hello Meinolf,
When the old server crashed, it required a new motherboard and
CPU. NT-4 and it wouldn't co-exist, so it was done as a clean
install by a tech support guy as I felt it was over my head.
I don't see us ever growing past what we have now (about 30
clients).
We don't run anything on the server by way of application. I
have
our
intranet posted there and quite a few shared folders so
different
people can
get access to the same things.

Hello RR2,
When it was NT4, did you upgrade or create a total new server?
Unfortunal single label domain names should be avoided. Will
not be a problem in your small network i hope, but if you think
to grow you have to change it to royalnet.local or similar, do
not use a real ending like .com or .net domain internal.
Exchange 2007 for example will not run with single label domain
names.
Again, please post the scope options from your DHCP server.

Correct, only "royalnet" for a name. Our previous domain

not to confuse the new from the old security hashes.

Hello RR2,
For the scope, use more then one ip, make a range of 5
and
when
the
ip is
leased from the client, exclude the other ones.
As said before remove the 209.253.113.10 and
209.253.113.18
from
the
DNS
configuration on the NIC's and setup a forwarder as
described.
Please post your scope options also.

issue
one

IPv6 unchecked

209.253.113.10
209.253.113.18

DHCP disabled.
Client
Obtain IP address automatically
Use following DNS
192.168.1.2
209.253.113.10
209.253.113.18
On client I reseased and then refreshed ipconfig. The
correct
DNS

under ipconfig /all, but default gateway was blank.

Hello RR2,
Did you authorize the DHCP server and activate the

I don't have much option on running 2 DHCP. If I rely on just the server, I
can't get on the internet at all so I can't follow this group for your
replies. I periodically disable the router DHCP just to test the
workstation, then turn it back on.
Under "quarterback" (the server's name) are two forward lookup zones:
_msdc.royalnet
and
royalnet
Under royalnet are the workstation that I'm on, our SQL server, and two
other workstations which are presently not running. Other than this
workstation (Vista), the other three listed are all running Win2K O/S.
I've noticed a listing in the event viewer that hasn't been there in the
past:
ERROR DHCP Server Event ID 1070
"Iashelpr initialization failed 1060, so DHCP server cannot talk to NPS
server. It could be that IAS service is not started"
I couldn't find any service listed that was even close to "IAS"

The IP is fresh. In fact, I changed out my test workstation and ran
through the whole IP config routines just to make sure there was
nothing wrong with the box I was using for the test. The new one can
still not get on the internet. The workstaion I'm on is using the
router as DHCP server. If I disable the DCHP in the router, nothing
gets on.
Please clarify the settings I should use for my nic on the server.
Currently showing for IP : 192.168.1.2 ; 255.255.255.0; 192.168.1.1

If the workstation ip is expired, the lease time is exceeded, delete
the ip on the DHCP server "address leases" and run ipconfig /renew on
the workstation.
The forwarders ip is only used form the DNS server, all domain
members will ask the domain DNS server for the www.whatever.com
address, if the server doesn't know it, it will automatically forward
ther request to the ip addresses under the forwarders tab. So you
will not see the addresses anywhere else.

I think we're gaining some ground, but still not working right yet.
When I do a "ipconfig /all" on the client, it is now showing the
router's IP address as it should, but I still can't get to the

I've noticed a couple of things in the server that may or may not be

1. There is a blue exclamation mark "!" showing by IPv4 under the

2. Although the forwarders are set as you described earlier, I
don't
see
them listed anywhere unless I right click on the server name.

Hello Meinolf,
When the old server crashed, it required a new motherboard and
CPU. NT-4 and it wouldn't co-exist, so it was done as a clean
install by a tech support guy as I felt it was over my head.
I don't see us ever growing past what we have now (about 30

Hello RR2,
When it was NT4, did you upgrade or create a total new
server? Unfortunal single label domain names should be
avoided. Will not be a problem in your small network i hope,
but if you think to grow you have to change it to
royalnet.local or similar, do not use a real ending like .com
or .net domain internal. Exchange 2007 for example will not
run with single label domain names.
Again, please post the scope options from your DHCP server.

Correct, only "royalnet" for a name. Our previous domain

Hi Meinolf,
I really appreciate the info you're coming back with.
As you may guess, my networking abilities are limited
to
hands-on learning.
In the console add the server if not displayed. If you
see the servername, mark it, rightclick and choose
properties. On the opened window choose the FORWARDERS
tab and here fill in the 209.x.x.x addresses, doesn't
matter which order. If the options are greyed out, open
the + and go to the Forward lookup zones, here you can
see a "." zone (root zone, only used from DNS root
servers), rightclick the "." and delete it. Then close
the DNS management console and open it again. Now you
can add the addresses to the FORWARDERS tab, it will
not longer be greyed out.
Where do I exclude the unused IPs?
Open the DHCP console, choose your created scope and
open the +. Here you can see Exclusions, scope options,
leases. Rightclick Exclusions and choose add exclusion
range or similar, on the popped up window you can
either specify a range or a single ip address.
I could probably stumble around
and find it, but it's easier to ask and prove I'm
stupid
as
opposed
to
locking everyone out and having them tell me.

Hello RR2,
Did you authorize the DHCP server and activate the
scope? If the DHCP scope options are setup
correctly with domain internal DNS server and
default gateway, the router ip from the LAN run
ipconfig /renew on a client or reboot it. It should
get the correc tsettings from the DHCP server.
Additional you have to configure the DNS server
from the DC, which normally will be installed
during promotion of the first DC, with a forwarder
ip address. This ip is the DNS server from your ISP
and has to be set on the server properties in the
DNS management console under the forwarders tab. On
all machines in the domain you have to use only the
LAN internal DNS server no external/public ip
address.

I forgot to mention that although I have two DHCPs running, they have
different scopes to, hopefully, aviod conflicts.

For DNS: 192.168.1.2 all others are blank. On the workstaion, it's
set for automatic all the way.

If the workstation ip is expired, the lease time is exceeded, delete
the ip on the DHCP server "address leases" and run ipconfig /renew on
the workstation.
The forwarders ip is only used form the DNS server, all domain

ther request to the ip addresses under the forwarders tab. So you

Hello RR2,
When it was NT4, did you upgrade or create a total new

Our previous domain
under NT-4 was a single word, so I changed it slightly so as
not to confuse the new from the old security hashes.

Hello Meinolf,
OK, here's where we stand.
I've extended the scope to five IPs (227-232)
No exclusion area listed even after refresh, so I
skipped
that
part.
209..... DNS listings removed from the server as well as
the
client.
Forwarders were already set. Must have been picked up
from
the
router.
I did the ipconfig series (all, release, renew, all) on
the
client. Even rebooted the client.
Still no internet.
NOTE: I did not kill the DHCP service on the router as
the
rest of the company is still logged in.

Hi Meinolf,
I really appreciate the info you're coming back with.
As you may guess, my networking abilities are limited
to
hands-on learning.
In the console add the server if not displayed. If you
see the servername, mark it, rightclick and choose
properties. On the opened window choose the FORWARDERS
tab and here fill in the 209.x.x.x addresses, doesn't
matter which order. If the options are greyed out, open
the + and go to the Forward lookup zones, here you can
see a "." zone (root zone, only used from DNS root
servers), rightclick the "." and delete it. Then close
the DNS management console and open it again. Now you
can add the addresses to the FORWARDERS tab, it will
not longer be greyed out.
Where do I exclude the unused IPs?
Open the DHCP console, choose your created scope and
open the +. Here you can see Exclusions, scope options,
leases. Rightclick Exclusions and choose add exclusion
range or similar, on the popped up window you can
either specify a range or a single ip address.
I could probably stumble around
and find it, but it's easier to ask and prove I'm
stupid
as
opposed
to
locking everyone out and having them tell me.

Hello RR2,
For the scope, use more then one ip, make a range of
5
and
when
the
ip is
leased from the client, exclude the other ones.
As said before remove the 209.253.113.10 and
209.253.113.18
from
the
DNS
configuration on the NIC's and setup a forwarder as
described.
Please post your scope options also.

209.253.113.10
209.253.113.18
Router (IP is 192.168.1.1)
DHCP disabled.
Client
Obtain IP address automatically
Use following DNS
192.168.1.2
209.253.113.10
209.253.113.18
On client I reseased and then refreshed ipconfig.
The
correct
DNS
showed up
under ipconfig /all, but default gateway was blank.
No
internet.
I also ran the same routine with the DNS on the
client
set

Hello RR2,
Did you authorize the DHCP server and activate the
On
all machines in the domain you have to use only the
LAN internal DNS server no external/public ip
address.

That would be my desire, but I'm haveing problems
there too. I tried changing to the server for DHCP
service, but couldn't get to the internet. For
some reason, the DHCP server on the domain server
isn't passing the default gateway to the clients.
Since our previous server (before the crash) was
setup with the router serving DHCP, I left it that
way from the beginning. The old server was an NT-4
server and all worked well.

Periodically, someone updating one of the shared

event viewer on the client PC shows Application
Hang. There are no events showing on the server

the
server lock at that time and the only way out is
to reboot the server.
Additional information that may or may not be

Any suggestions as to what could be causing the

Hello RR2,
Ok, but if you think about new software like exchange remember
the problem with single label domain names. Back to DHCP, what
about the client ipconfig without the DG ip address?

Hello Meinolf,
When the old server crashed, it required a new motherboard and
CPU. NT-4 and it wouldn't co-exist, so it was done as a clean
install by a tech support guy as I felt it was over my head.
I don't see us ever growing past what we have now (about 30
clients).
We don't run anything on the server by way of application. I
have
our
intranet posted there and quite a few shared folders so
different
people can
get access to the same things.
Cheers,
Ron

Hello RR2,
When it was NT4, did you upgrade or create a total new server?
Unfortunal single label domain names should be avoided. Will
not be a problem in your small network i hope, but if you think
to grow you have to change it to royalnet.local or similar, do
not use a real ending like .com or .net domain internal.
Exchange 2007 for example will not run with single label domain
names.
Again, please post the scope options from your DHCP server.

Correct, only "royalnet" for a name. Our previous domain
under NT-4 was a single word, so I changed it slightly so as
not to confuse the new from the old security hashes.
the exclusions have been entered for 128-132

Hello RR2,
For the exclusion i was rong sorry, rightclick Address Pool
and choose New exclusion range. What is listed if you mark
the scope options? You should see at least,006 DNS servers,
003 Router.
Your domain name is only royalnet? Nothing with
royalnet.local or something else?

Please post an unedited ipconfig /all from the client and

The
Exclusions in DHCP you have to add by hand, will NOT be

automatic,
how to i posted before.
Again, is the DHCP server authorized? In the DHCP console
rightclick
the
server and check AUTHORIZE option. Also did you activate

Hello Meinolf,
OK, here's where we stand.
I've extended the scope to five IPs (227-232)
No exclusion area listed even after refresh, so I skipped
that
part.

I could probably stumble around
and find it, but it's easier to ask and prove I'm stupid
as
opposed
to
locking everyone out and having them tell me.

.
Hello RR2,
For the scope, use more then one ip, make a range of 5
and
when
the
ip is
leased from the client, exclude the other ones.
As said before remove the 209.253.113.10 and
209.253.113.18
from
the
DNS
configuration on the NIC's and setup a forwarder as
described.
Please post your scope options also.

209.253.113.18

Client
Obtain IP address automatically
Use following DNS
192.168.1.2
209.253.113.10
209.253.113.18
On client I reseased and then refreshed ipconfig. The
correct
DNS
showed up
under ipconfig /all, but default gateway was blank.
No
internet.
I also ran the same routine with the DNS on the client
set

Hello RR2,
Did you authorize the DHCP server and activate the
scope? If the DHCP scope options are setup correctly
with domain internal DNS server and default gateway,
the router ip from the LAN run ipconfig /renew on a
client or reboot it. It should get the correc
tsettings from the DHCP server. Additional you have
to configure the DNS server from the DC, which
normally will be installed during promotion of the
first DC, with a forwarder ip address. This ip is the
DNS server from your ISP and has to be set on the
server properties in the DNS management console under
the forwarders tab. On all machines in the domain you
have to use only the LAN internal DNS server no
external/public ip address.

That would be my desire, but I'm haveing problems
there too. I tried changing to the server for DHCP
service, but couldn't get to the internet. For some
reason, the DHCP server on the domain server isn't
passing the default gateway to the clients. Since
our previous server (before the crash) was setup
with the router serving DHCP, I left it that way
from the beginning. The old server was an NT-4
server and all worked well.

We've recently installed Windows Server 2008 and
are now experiencing some problems with
application hangups.
The server is a domain server with a few shared
files and folders. No applications are installed
on the server.
Periodically, someone updating one of the shared
files from a client PC will cause a lockup. The
event viewer on the client PC shows Application
Hang. There are no events showing on the server
for the time of the "incident". All shares on the
server lock at that time and the only way out is
to reboot the server.
Additional information that may or may not be
related. Our router is acting as DHCP server for
the entire LAN. The DHCP server on the domain
server is disabled through services and
unauthorized.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing the
lockups? |

This is getting worse all the time. Per the other error, I've installed NPS

I think we were far far better off with NT-4. It's just not compatible with

Do not run 2 DHCP servers together, that will create conflicts for the client.
Under DNS management console is the server listed under Forward lookup zone,

If the workstation ip is expired, the lease time is exceeded, delete
the ip on the DHCP server "address leases" and run ipconfig /renew on
the workstation.
The forwarders ip is only used form the DNS server, all domain
members will ask the domain DNS server for the www.whatever.com
address, if the server doesn't know it, it will automatically forward
ther request to the ip addresses under the forwarders tab. So you
will not see the addresses anywhere else.

When I do a "ipconfig /all" on the client, it is now showing the

I've noticed a couple of things in the server that may or may not be

Hello RR2,
When it was NT4, did you upgrade or create a total new

Our previous domain

not to confuse the new from the old security hashes.

In the console add the server if not displayed. If you
see the servername, mark it, rightclick and choose
properties. On the opened window choose the FORWARDERS
tab and here fill in the 209.x.x.x addresses, doesn't
matter which order. If the options are greyed out, open
the + and go to the Forward lookup zones, here you can
see a "." zone (root zone, only used from DNS root
servers), rightclick the "." and delete it. Then close
the DNS management console and open it again. Now you
can add the addresses to the FORWARDERS tab, it will
not longer be greyed out.
Where do I exclude the unused IPs?
Open the DHCP console, choose your created scope and
open the +. Here you can see Exclusions, scope options,
leases. Rightclick Exclusions and choose add exclusion
range or similar, on the popped up window you can
either specify a range or a single ip address.
I could probably stumble around
and find it, but it's easier to ask and prove I'm
stupid
as
opposed
to
locking everyone out and having them tell me.

Hello RR2,
For the scope, use more then one ip, make a range of
5
and
when
the
ip is
leased from the client, exclude the other ones.
As said before remove the 209.253.113.10 and
209.253.113.18
from
the
DNS
configuration on the NIC's and setup a forwarder as
described.
Please post your scope options also.

Here's the steup I tried. I limited this to one
test client when no one else was in the office so
other logins were avoided.
Server:
DHCP service running and authorized.

only

one
IP)
IPv6 unchecked

255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
DNS
192.168.1.2
209.253.113.10
209.253.113.18
Router (IP is 192.168.1.1)
DHCP disabled.
Client
Obtain IP address automatically
Use following DNS
192.168.1.2
209.253.113.10
209.253.113.18
On client I reseased and then refreshed ipconfig.
The
correct
DNS
showed up
under ipconfig /all, but default gateway was blank.
No
internet.
I also ran the same routine with the DNS on the
client
set
to
automatic.
I know I'm doing something wrong somewhere along the
line.

Hello RR2,
Did you authorize the DHCP server and activate the
On
all machines in the domain you have to use only the
LAN internal DNS server no external/public ip

We've recently installed Windows Server 2008 and
are now experiencing some problems with
application hangups.
The server is a domain server with a few shared
files and folders. No applications are installed
on the server.
Periodically, someone updating one of the shared
files from a client PC will cause a lockup. The
event viewer on the client PC shows Application
Hang. There are no events showing on the server
for the time of the "incident". All shares on
the
server lock at that time and the only way out is
to reboot the server.
Additional information that may or may not be
related. Our router is acting as DHCP server for
the entire LAN. The DHCP server on the domain
server is disabled through services and
unauthorized.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing the
lockups? |

Is there an issue with the default gateway being a lower IP number
than the DNS. I wouldn't think so, but then I've been wrong once or

Hello RR2,
See here for the DHCP icons and description:
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/f2013b82-248c-

If the workstation ip is expired, the lease time is exceeded, delete
the ip on the DHCP server "address leases" and run ipconfig /renew on
the workstation.
The forwarders ip is only used form the DNS server, all domain
members will ask the domain DNS server for the www.whatever.com
address, if the server doesn't know it, it will automatically forward
ther request to the ip addresses under the forwarders tab. So you
will not see the addresses anywhere else.

1. There is a blue exclamation mark "!" showing by IPv4 under the
DHCP
Server
2. Although the forwarders are set as you described earlier, I
don't
see
them listed anywhere unless I right click on the server name.

OK, here's where we stand.
I've extended the scope to five IPs (227-232)
No exclusion area listed even after refresh, so I

209..... DNS listings removed from the server as well as
the

Forwarders were already set. Must have been picked up

Hi Meinolf,
I really appreciate the info you're coming back with.
As you may guess, my networking abilities are limited
to
hands-on learning.
In the console add the server if not displayed. If you
see the servername, mark it, rightclick and choose
properties. On the opened window choose the FORWARDERS
tab and here fill in the 209.x.x.x addresses, doesn't
matter which order. If the options are greyed out, open
the + and go to the Forward lookup zones, here you can
see a "." zone (root zone, only used from DNS root
servers), rightclick the "." and delete it. Then close
the DNS management console and open it again. Now you
can add the addresses to the FORWARDERS tab, it will
not longer be greyed out.
Where do I exclude the unused IPs?
Open the DHCP console, choose your created scope and
open the +. Here you can see Exclusions, scope options,
leases. Rightclick Exclusions and choose add exclusion
range or similar, on the popped up window you can
either specify a range or a single ip address.
I could probably stumble around
and find it, but it's easier to ask and prove I'm
stupid
as
opposed
to
locking everyone out and having them tell me.

Hello RR2,
For the scope, use more then one ip, make a range of
5
and
when
the
ip is
leased from the client, exclude the other ones.
As said before remove the 209.253.113.10 and
209.253.113.18
from
the
DNS
configuration on the NIC's and setup a forwarder as
described.
Please post your scope options also.

209.253.113.18

Client
Obtain IP address automatically
Use following DNS
192.168.1.2
209.253.113.10
209.253.113.18
On client I reseased and then refreshed ipconfig.
The

Hello RR2,
Did you authorize the DHCP server and activate the
On
all machines in the domain you have to use only the
LAN internal DNS server no external/public ip

We've recently installed Windows Server 2008 and
are now experiencing some problems with
application hangups.
The server is a domain server with a few shared
files and folders. No applications are installed
on the server.
Periodically, someone updating one of the shared
files from a client PC will cause a lockup. The
event viewer on the client PC shows Application
Hang. There are no events showing on the server
for the time of the "incident". All shares on
the
server lock at that time and the only way out is
to reboot the server.
Additional information that may or may not be
related. Our router is acting as DHCP server for
the entire LAN. The DHCP server on the domain
server is disabled through services and
unauthorized.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing the
lockups? |

This is getting worse all the time. Per the other error, I've
installed NPS for whatever good that does me. The exclamation mark
went away indicating a problem, but now when I do ipconfig /renew, the

The IP is fresh. In fact, I changed out my test workstation and ran

nothing wrong with the box I was using for the test. The new one
can still not get on the internet. The workstaion I'm on is using

nothing gets on.

If the workstation ip is expired, the lease time is exceeded,
delete
the ip on the DHCP server "address leases" and run ipconfig /renew
on
the workstation.
The forwarders ip is only used form the DNS server, all domain
members will ask the domain DNS server for the www.whatever.com
address, if the server doesn't know it, it will automatically
forward ther request to the ip addresses under the forwarders tab.
So you will not see the addresses anywhere else.

When the old server crashed, it required a new motherboard
and CPU. NT-4 and it wouldn't co-exist, so it was done as a

Hello RR2,
When it was NT4, did you upgrade or create a total new
server? Unfortunal single label domain names should be
avoided. Will not be a problem in your small network i
hope, but if you think to grow you have to change it to
royalnet.local or similar, do not use a real ending like
.com or .net domain internal. Exchange 2007 for example
will not run with single label domain names.

remove the dns 209............... Is this from the
server nic, the client, or both?
On all computers NIC'S in your domain.
"setup a forwarder" Please explain.
On the server open the DNS management console, go to
Start, Run and type "dnsmgmt.msc" without the quotes.
In the console add the server if not displayed. If
you see the servername, mark it, rightclick and
choose properties. On the opened window choose the
FORWARDERS tab and here fill in the 209.x.x.x
addresses, doesn't matter which order. If the options
are greyed out, open the + and go to the Forward
lookup zones, here you can see a "." zone (root zone,
only used from DNS root servers), rightclick the "."
and delete it. Then close the DNS management console
and open it again. Now you can add the addresses to
the FORWARDERS tab, it will not longer be greyed out.
Where do I exclude the unused IPs?
Open the DHCP console, choose your created scope and
open the +. Here you can see Exclusions, scope
options, leases. Rightclick Exclusions and choose add
exclusion range or similar, on the popped up window
you can either specify a range or a single ip
address.
I could probably stumble around
and find it, but it's easier to ask and prove I'm
stupid
as
opposed
to
locking everyone out and having them tell me.

Hello RR2,
For the scope, use more then one ip, make a range
of
5
and
when
the
ip is
leased from the client, exclude the other ones.
As said before remove the 209.253.113.10 and
209.253.113.18
from
the
DNS
configuration on the NIC's and setup a forwarder as
described.
Please post your scope options also.

Client
Obtain IP address automatically
Use following DNS
192.168.1.2

Hello RR2,
Did you authorize the DHCP server and activate
the scope? If the DHCP scope options are setup
correctly with domain internal DNS server and
default gateway, the router ip from the LAN run
ipconfig /renew on a client or reboot it. It
should get the correc tsettings from the DHCP
server. Additional you have to configure the DNS
server from the DC, which normally will be
installed during promotion of the first DC, with
a forwarder ip address. This ip is the DNS server
from your ISP and has to be set on the server
properties in the DNS management console under
the forwarders tab. On all machines in the domain
you have to use only the LAN internal DNS server
no external/public ip address.

That would be my desire, but I'm haveing
problems there too. I tried changing to the
server for DHCP service, but couldn't get to the
internet. For some reason, the DHCP server on
the domain server isn't passing the default
gateway to the clients. Since our previous
server (before the crash) was setup with the
router serving DHCP, I left it that way from the
beginning. The old server was an NT-4 server and
all worked well.

I'm also slowly moving clients over to the DHCP server on the server. I'm

Hi Meinolf,
The clients are all on Win2K Pro, XP Pro, and mine is on Vista.
After sending the previous message, I had a file lockup again, so I probably
spoke prematurely and jinxed myself. Evidently, that wasn't the cure.
I'm having the same issues with DHCP that we were working with also. I have
a couple of clients migrated to the server and seem to be working OK, but
the event viewer on the server is showing Event ID 1070. Whenever I
installed NPS to clear the issue, the clients couldn't connect to the
internet. Now, we're in the middle of the workweek and I am unable to do

I need a clarification on this:
DHCP > Scope > Scope Options
For "006 DNS Servers", this field auto populated with 192.168.1.126 which is
a client and who's IP is issued from the router.
My DNS server IP is actually 192.168.1.2. Should I manually change the 006
field to 192.168.1.2 ?
Thanks,
R.

I'm having the same issues with DHCP that we were working with also. I
have a couple of clients migrated to the server and seem to be working OK,
but the event viewer on the server is showing Event ID 1070. Whenever I
installed NPS to clear the issue, the clients couldn't connect to the
internet. Now, we're in the middle of the workweek and I am unable to do
tests.

Hello RR2,
Nice to hear, but keep in mind disabling SMB signing is also lowering the
security level of the complete domain. What OS are your clients running?
Think we never talked about.

Hello Meinolf,
I think the problem is solved. I disabled SMB signing in group
policies and haven't had a problem with system lockup since then.
I'm also slowly moving clients over to the DHCP server on the server.
I'm being vary cautious about this move so I don't have to back track
too far if anything goes wrong.

Frustration is growing long and the day is growing short. I'm once
again
removing NPS which seems to be nothing but an added confusion factor.
I'll disable DHCP on the server so as a minimum, the company will be
back
where it was at the start of business tomorrow.

OK, I reinstalled NPS and disconnected the router for a period of
time. No change, the client can still not refresh

I've just uninstalled NPS. Is this something I really need. If
so, I'll reinstall.

Hello RR2,
See here about NPS:

What happens if disconnect just for a short time the router from
the switch, where also server and client is connected. Will the
client get an ip address?
Best regards

This is getting worse all the time. Per the other error, I've
installed NPS for whatever good that does me. The exclamation
mark went away indicating a problem, but now when I do ipconfig
/renew, the workstation can't find the DHCP server.
I think we were far far better off with NT-4. It's just not
compatible with the hardware.

Hello RR2,
So you run 2 different scopes on the server and have the DHCP on
the router also running?

We've recently installed Windows Server 2008 and are now
experiencing some problems with application hangups.
The server is a domain server with a few shared files and
folders. No applications are installed on the server.
Periodically, someone updating one of the shared files from a
client PC will cause a lockup. The event viewer on the client
PC shows Application Hang. There are no events showing on the
server for the time of the "incident". All shares on the server
lock at that time and the only way out is to reboot the server.
Additional information that may or may not be related. Our
router is acting as DHCP server for the entire LAN. The DHCP
server on the domain server is disabled through services and
unauthorized.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing the lockups?
