Hello RR2,
Never saw automatic changes of scope options. You have to change them by
hand.

Hi Meinolf,
The clients are all on Win2K Pro, XP Pro, and mine is on Vista.
After sending the previous message, I had a file lockup again, so I
probably spoke prematurely and jinxed myself. Evidently, that wasn't
the cure.
I'm having the same issues with DHCP that we were working with also.
I have a couple of clients migrated to the server and seem to be
working OK, but the event viewer on the server is showing Event ID
1070. Whenever I installed NPS to clear the issue, the clients
couldn't connect to the internet. Now, we're in the middle of the
workweek and I am unable to do tests.

Nice to hear, but keep in mind disabling SMB signing is also
lowering the security level of the complete domain. What OS are your
clients running? Think we never talked about.

Hello Meinolf,
I think the problem is solved. I disabled SMB signing in group
policies and haven't had a problem with system lockup since then.
I'm also slowly moving clients over to the DHCP server on the
server. I'm being vary cautious about this move so I don't have to
back track too far if anything goes wrong.

We've recently installed Windows Server 2008 and are now
experiencing some problems with application hangups.
The server is a domain server with a few shared files and
folders. No applications are installed on the server.
Periodically, someone updating one of the shared files from
a client PC will cause a lockup. The event viewer on the
client PC shows Application Hang. There are no events
showing on the server for the time of the "incident". All
shares on the server lock at that time and the only way out
is to reboot the server.
Additional information that may or may not be related. Our
router is acting as DHCP server for the entire LAN. The
DHCP server on the domain server is disabled through
services and unauthorized.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing the lockups?

Hello Meinolf,
I want to catch you up on this issue before the thread gets old and
forgotten.
I ended up calling in a consultant today.
On the DHCP issue, he said everything was set correctly, but couldn't figure
out why it wasn't working like it was supposed to. In one last act of
desperation, he deleted the scope and reentered it. Bang, everything popped
up as it was supposed to. Must have been a corrupt file somewhere along the
line. He disabled the auto-protect feature in hopes that would take care of
the problem. After he left, I did some online research and found there is
indeed a problem with Excel files, Server 2008, and Symantec AV. I've since
listed all the suspect file extensions as exemptions. With luck, that will
take care of it.
Thanks again, for all your help along the way.
R.
While he was here, we also experienced the file lockup issue. That stumped
him also. His first thought was Symantec AV was causing the problem as it's
a little older than the server.
