Dear Customer,

Thank you for posting in newsgroup.

According to the description, you experience decreased performance on a
computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise edition X86. The
symptom is the computer stop responding (hang). Additionally, you also
experience the Event ID 2020 in the system log. If I have any
misunderstandings, please feel free to let me know.

For your reference, I have includes some troubleshooting steps as
followed.

Analysis and Suggestion:
=======================

1. This problem is more likely to occur when you use the /3GB switch in
the
Boot.ini file, which limits the nonpage pool memory that the system kernel
can use. Please refer to the following KB to View and request hotfix
downloads and then apply on the problematic server to see if it can be
helpful.

A computer that is running Windows Server 2003 may use lots of nonpaged
pool memory
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=918976

2. Here is a KB article which describe several possible reason for the
performance issue, please refer to it and check if it helps.

You experience slow file server performance and delays occur when you work
with files that are located on a file server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=822219

3. By default, the Memory Manager tries to trim allocated paged pool
memory
when the system reaches 80 percent of the total paged pool. Depending on
the system configuration, a possible maximum paged pool memory on a
computer can be 343MB and 80 percent of this number is 274MB. If the
Memory
Manager is unable to trim fast enough to keep up with the demand, the
event
ID 2020 may occur in the system log. You may try to keep up with the paged
pool demand during sudden peak usage, and avoid running out of paged pool
memory by tuning the Memory Manager to start the trimming process earlier
(for example, when it reaches 60 percent).

Steps:

a. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

b .Locate and then click the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management

c. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry
value:

Value name: PoolUsageMaximum
Data type: REG_DWORD
Radix: Decimal
Value data: 60

d. Setting the value at 60 informs the Memory Manager to start the
trimming
process at 60 percent of PagedPoolMax rather than the default setting of
80
percent. If a threshold of 60 percent is not enough to handle spikes in
activity, reduce this setting to 50 percent or 40 percent.

Value name: PagedPoolSize
Data type: REG_DWORD
Radix: Hex
Value data: 0xFFFFFFFF

f. Setting PagedPoolSize to 0xFFFFFFFF allocates the maximum paged pool in
lieu of other resources to the computer.

g. Quit Registry Editor.

h. Restart the server for the changes to take effect.

Reference:

Server is unable to allocate memory from the system paged pool
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312362

4. You may monitor the system to see if the performance issue still
exists,
if possible, please refer to the following KB article to request and apply
the corresponding hotfixs on the problematic server.

Event 2020 is logged and your Windows Server 2003-based file server stops
responding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886670

A Windows Server 2003-based computer stops responding when the system is
under a heavy load and when the Storport driver is being used
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941276

Event ID 2020 and event ID 1000 are logged and the registry size limit is
exceeded on a computer that is running Terminal Services in Application
Server mode and Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906952

5. Meanwhile, it is also reported that event ID 2020 occurs and the
computer may stop responding or respond slowly When TrendMicro OfficeScan
is installed on a Windows Server 2003-based computer. Please check the
following KB article to see if it will be helpful.

When TrendMicro OfficeScan is installed on a Windows Server 2003-based
computer, event ID 2020 occurs, and the computer may stop responding, or
the computer may respond slowly
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947475

6. If the performance issue still continues with the previous suggestion.
In this case, we may need to analyze the performance log and memory dump
file to solid find the root cause of the issue. Since the newsgroup is not
an efficient channel to analyze these files, I would suggest that you
contact Microsoft Customer Support service to troubleshoot this issue
efficiently.

You may obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please
take a look at the web site listed below:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;OfferProPhone#faq607

Meanwhile, here is some documents which may be helpful when you create the
Memory dump file and performance log

Did you recently update any hardware? Drivers? This really sounds like a
driver issue to me.

Disconnect everything but the keyboard, mouse, monitor & power. When you
boot up do you get the option to use 'last known good'?

Lanwench, I removed everything while initially waiting for a reply and the result is still
the same ..... the machine still hangs in both normal and safe mode. It also has the same
result if I select other options such as "Last known good" (as you suggested), .. One
thing I noticed is that it does go into command prompt but when I ask it to run 'chkdsk'
it says it cannot be found.

However after googling the issue it seems that I dont have an isolated problem, there are
many pages regarding the issue but no one seems to have a sure fire way of resolving it. I
think it may be time to reinstall it in an hour or so, and then make sure I include it in
the backup routine.

Try doing a repair install. It should get around the issue while preserving

Hi There:

We ran to the same problem upgrading a novell netware 5.x server to a
windows server 2003. I had to xxcopy to move the foldername and
filenames with long filenames. For some reasons some of the foldername
and filenames changed ownership to "Unable to display current owner". I
tried this to remedy the issue but still a small majority of folders and
files didn't get changed? Right-click folder -> properties -> security
tab -> advanced -> owner tab -> replace
owner on subcontainers.

Since we have tens of thousands of folders and files I need a global
solution to this issue. I heard of a utility called fileacl.exe that
might be able force folder ownership at the command line.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Carmine

I have seen there not showing the Control+ALT+Delete screen will cause the
system to wait for a console touch before it will finish booting. Try
disabling the policy on a few servers and test. I am pretty sure you will
get the result you want. Don’t ask me why.

So do I. So do many people, I'd say. However, this is a group for MS Small Business
Server. Regular W2003 questions are best posted in m.p.windows.server.general. I'm
setting up my reply to crosspost there.

After a recent update I had to restart the machine, my problem now is
the server hangs at the boot screen or if its in safe mode it hangs
at "" acpitabl.dat "".
Is there any way to get this machine to boot or is it going to be a
rebuild, I know someones going to say " restore it from backup "
......... my only problem here is that ... well ...... erm.....its
the only machine on my network thats not backed up .......... d'oh
... I guess that experience is a great teacher and boy is this going
to be a lesson and a half.

"The cobbler's children go barefoot," as they say.

The only software running on this machine is symantec antivirus V10
and the server OS, everything else connects to this for various
reasons. There are a couple of raided drives on 'silicon' cards in
the machine but these have not proved problematic in the past so I'm
not questioning these at the moment, all other hardware is onboard
and has not shown any problems prior to this issue.

Did you recently update any hardware? Drivers? This really sounds like a driver issue to
me.

Disconnect everything but the keyboard, mouse, monitor & power. When you boot up do you
get the option to use 'last known good'?

Problem solved!

Machine specs:
Server 2003
9 x Hdd's (various sizes)
1 x DVDrw
Asus Motherboard
2 x Raid Cards (both Silicon images 0680-133-raid)

Initial problem was pc hanging on acpitabl after reboot.

Findings:

Removed all internal cards except for VGA card, plugged master drive (cSmile directly to
motherboard to eliminate raid problems, main drive still doesn't boot to OS at this point
so I'm now looking at software issues of sorts. Had to format main 'C' drive and
reinstall 2003, I did this from the motherboard as it could potentially be raid card
failure at this point, reinstall went ok updated, installed antivirus, ..... the usual
stuff .....so on and so forth......

I then introduced the raid card (1) into the system again and installed the drivers, after
a reboot I put the C: drive onto the raid card alongwith its mate and rebuilt the raid.
All ok so far, the raid rebuilt and I then put the second set of drives onto the card (1)
and rebuilt the second raid set. At this point the pc is still ok and runs like new so I
introduced the second raid card (2) to the system without drives, rebooted and everything
is still fine. The second set of drives were not raided but ran seperately of each other,
so I connected one drive and restarted the machine which ran ok. It wasn't until the
second drive was connected that the machine showed similar signs of the initial problem,
however the machine booted after a while and told me that I need to initialise the last
drive that was connected. The drive has lost the partition table (god knows how) and
data, the only thing it knows is that its a 160gb.........mmmmm.

I'm now setting about recovering the data and only have to wait another 13 hours for the
scan to complete, it looks promising as its found over 89,000 files so far. Still it will
keep me busy over the weekend setting up permissions and shares.

I only added this information to the post as someone may stumble across it and may just
find it helpful.

PostPosted: Thu Feb 12, 2009 2:33 pm    Post subject: Re: Server 2003 Can't install or uninstall NICS - i.e. no ne Reply with quote

I experienced this exact problem and spent many many hours trying to
resolve it. All Internet searches revealed many things to try but
nothing short of reinstalling Windows resolved the problem. I gave up
and called MS for after hours support ($515). They were able to give me
the fix within minutes. If the solution below helps you, please help me
defray my out of pocket costs for the support call by sending a buck or
two to my paypal account - lancesjunk 'at' comcast.net

Background of my problem. I accidentally installed symantec endpoint
protection with network threat protection (the firewall) on my exchange
server. This hosed up all network communication. I uninstalled the
product, but it left the "teefer2" network drivers in the hidden device
manager (seen by running "set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1" and
setting Show Hidden Devices from the view menu of device manager.

The network communication problem still existed after going through the
lengthy manual removal process found here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007073018014248

I was not able to uninstall or replace the drivers for the network
cards to get them working correctly. It would always give me the error
about the device being needed for booting.

Throughout this process, I have continually received the error, "#E154
Class installer failed. Error 2: The system cannot find the file
specified.", while trying to get the drivers installed/updated for the
cards. This was in the file c:\windows\setupapi.log I tried every
driver known to man for these cards. At the end of every driver
installation or update, I would get an error from the Hardware Update
Wizard, which says:

"Cannot install this hardware"
There was a problem installing this hardware
Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet
An error occurred during the installation of the Device
The system cannot find the file specified

The actual process looks correct, as in, it is showing the files
getting copied and I get the signed driver error on some that I tried,
but the error is always the same.

Without much hope left, and facing a possible restore, I went through
the entire registry and deleted anything that was associate with the
broadcom cards and teefer2. This removed the nics and teefer2 from
device manager and I was confident reinstalling "from scratch" would
work, but it did not -I got all the problems mentioned above from the
hardware wizard, and in setupapi.log.

This was my breaking point and decided to seek Microsoft's help. I am
glad I did as their solution was simple, yet very obscure.

Backup and then delete the REG_BINARY value 'CONFIG' (not the
"network" key from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network

You then restart the computer and either Windows will install the card
automatically, or you will have to kick it off. If it is already in
Device Manager, you may have to update the driver. This time it will
work like magic.

A MS knowledge base article can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937056
Although, it is for a slightly different issue, the underlying problem
of holding onto incorrect information is the same. It also lists only
win2000 and 2003sp1 having been affected, but my problem was on SP2 of
2003 server.

After the headache I got from endless google searches and deadends, I
hope this helps somebody before going through all the trouble. Please
forgive the reposting on other threads experiencing the same problem.

I interpreted that wording on that link the same way (7th question under
"General"):

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/priclicfaq.mspx

--but apparently Microsoft does not use the same product key for both
platforms, i.e. I tried to use my current OEM key with x64 OEM media and it
wouldn't take it during Setup.

Is this just an error in the FAQ? If Microsoft offers the option of
exchanging my existing key (the one supplied with the 32-bit media) for an
x64 compliant key, I'd be very happy to do so.

"John Prevette" wrote:

Thanks for your response Carey. In my goal to get x64 running at home, I

I incorrectly used the term "upgrade". I want to do a clean install, I
just need an x64 NFR version CD to do it. Couldn't I just get an NFR image
CD of Windows 2003 Enterprise x64 edition and then do the install but use the
key that I have for my 32 bit NFR version?

Looking elsewhere on Microsoft's site reveals the following ...

URL =
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/priclicfaq.mspx#EEAAA

+++++++++++++++
Q. How do I find the pricing and licensing terms for the 64-bit versions of
Windows Server 2003?

A. The 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the software are the same price. The
license grants the customer the option of using either the 32-bit version or
the 64-bit version of the software. Client access licenses (CALs) are still
required to access or use the server.
+++++++++++++++

So, in my mind I have a license (an NFR license) and I want to know how I
can exercise my option of using the 64 bit version of the software. It needs
CALs and I have 25 of them with my NFR 32 bit license.

If the answer is that you can't use the 32 bit NFR for 64 bit in some way,
then I guess all of those NFRs they gave out to MCSE MOC training candidates
are junk (at least from a 64 bit perspective).

PostPosted: Fri Feb 27, 2009 1:02 am    Post subject: Re: KB960089 fails to install - Windows Server 2008 SP1 with Reply with quote

The "Security Update" for the Windows Internal Database KB960089 fails to
install - Windows Server 2008 SP1 with Hyper-V 64 bit. The Windows Internal
Database is being used by WSUS. This server is also a Domain Controller
(home installation for testing - very small domain - only 2 physical
computers and some virtual machines).

As suggested by Microsoft support, I've done the following, but this update
still does not install.

Any suggestions?

1. downloaded WYukon2005Setup-KB960089-x64-ENU.exe via
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=05c5c265-cfd7-4364-b323-77650b7f1e67&DisplayLang=en
2. stopped the Update Services and Windows Internal Database
(MICROSOFT##MSEE)
3. launched a Command Prompt with Run As Administrator
4. ran WYukon2005Setup-KB960089-x64-ENU.exe
5. observed a message box saying that filese were being extracted
6. observed that the above message box disappeared and nothing else
happened - no new message boxes, balloons etc. and not messages in the
Comand Prompt window
7. in the Application Event Log, I found the following Events:

Try running WYukon....exe /x and then running setup from within the
extracted folder.

Otherwise, not sure how much help you will get from Microsoft, since running
SQL Server instances on a domain controller is not recommended (and perhaps
not even supported). They will probably suggest you run WSUS and other SQL
Server instances elsewhere. <shrug>

1. downloaded WYukon2005Setup-KB960089-x64-ENU.exe via
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=05c5c265-cfd7-4364-b3
23-77650b7f1e67&DisplayLang=en
2. stopped the Update Services and Windows Internal Database
(MICROSOFT##MSEE)
3. launched a Command Prompt with Run As Administrator
4. ran WYukon2005Setup-KB960089-x64-ENU.exe
5. observed a message box saying that filese were being extracted
6. observed that the above message box disappeared and nothing else
happened - no new message boxes, balloons etc. and not messages in the
Comand Prompt window
7. in the Application Event Log, I found the following Events:
