When I set VSS to manual or automatic, and check back the next day, it is
set to disabled. Why is this happening? Windows Server 2003 R2 standard.

Thanks.

Nothing for VSS itself in the System log. I did find a DCOM error but this
simply states that VSS is disabled. Any other thoughts?

DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled
or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to
start the service VSS with arguments "" in order to run the server:

It should be set to manual. It will start when required. If it is changing
to disabled and nothing is being logged then I'd suspect it may conflict
with something else that was installed.

More info from the System log below. Is it possible that a group policy
setting is disabling this? How can I determine which process is issuing the
state change?

Event ID 7040: The start type of the Volume Shadow Copy service was changed
from demand start to disabled.

Event ID 7035: The Volume Shadow Copy service was successfully sent a stop
control.

Event ID 7036: The Volume Shadow Copy service entered the stopped state.
