James,
you might want to be a bit more specific if you expect some help with this
one. What exactly is the error message and at which point is it displayed?
Do you have a recent System State backup of the server? How many domain
controllers do you have? How many domain controllers do you have? In
general, you can refer to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/dd300597.aspx

Hello jamescf,

That is really a bit less information. What exact error message is shown.
Please describe more detailed your network setup, amount of DC's etc. Are
you able to start in AD restore mode and check the event viewer for error
messages?

Best regards

I have one domain controller and a few workstations.
I get no messages directly from the AD. When I try to run it, I get "logon
attempt failed, not connected"
Many other servces fail, DHCP, etc. Because the AD is not running.
I do not know about AD restore mode.
Because of these failures, the system takes an hour to come up.
After it comes up, I get "at least one service failed to start".

Hello jamescf,

Do you try to logon local on the DC or with remote desktop or any other tool?

Make sure that all services that are set to automatic under services.msc
from the run line are started. On a DC "DNS server", "File replication",
"Netlogon", "Kerberos Key distribution Center" must run.

Please post services that are set to automatic and do NOT be started.

Also post an unedited ipconfig /all from the DC.

Best regards

Do you have RRAS installed? Otherwise, why is IP routing and WINS Proxy
enabled? I've seen this before. That could be the primary reason there are
problems. Tell you what, disable RRAS, if it is running, and try again.

As for Event log errors:

EventID 1008 Terminal services - Do you run this as a terminal server? If
so, your license is expired. If you are not, and just using it for remote
administration, go through Add/Remove, Windows Components, and remove
Terminal Services. Then restart, then go to System in Control Panel, and
enable Remote Desktop.

EventID 5722 and Kerb errors for WS1 - Disjoin and rejoin WS1 from the
domain.

EvengtID 8003 MrxSmb - Force the server to be the Domain Master. Follow this
article:
Click Start, click Run, type Regedt32, and then click OK.
Locate the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\
Change the value to of MaintainServerList to Yes
Restart the computer.

This way the server is always the browse master. HOwever, if the
communications issue do not get resolved on the server, then it cannot be
the browse master and the workstations will initiate an election anytime
someone opens up Network Neighborhood or browses for something.

Start by changing your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Right now you have it
dorked at 225.225.225.0

Good catch!

But then again, I think that may be a typo because it appears the poster may
have manually typed the requested configs instead of simply copying it from
the command window and pasting it in the reply.

Ace - I checked the registry. The value was "yes"
I cannot un and rejoin WS1 because I have no access to the AD.
The , was a typo.
Another odd thing: I cannot ping WS1 from the server - fails
If I ping it from WS2, I get 26.28.193.9 for WS1 and for a printer on my
net. If I tracetrt this # it finds a rr addres 30 + hops away. I googled
this ip and found a refererence om a MS fourm but no resolution. This weird

What did you find in the registry with the value of Yes?

Is RRAS configured and running? Check using: Start/Admin Tools Routing and
remote access. If it is runing, right-click, disable.

Acccording to http://en.utrace.de/whois/26.28.193.9, that IP range belongs
to a company in Ohio.

When you tried to disjoin it, did you supply the credentials for the AD
admin account?

How are you trying to ping WS1? By single name or FQDN? Does a record exist
in DNS for WS1?

What DNS addresses are the client machines using? Can you post an unedited
ipconfig a/ll from two of your clients, please? Run the command as the
following example. It will put it into a text file, that you can copy and
paste into your reply.

ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt

192.168.1.1 refers to my router which is plugged into Road Runner
DNS is assigned by ntserver

The IP I mentioned is a RR IP in the DC area according to my information
MY OKIC3400 returns this address from a ping FQDN ie: C34000b8F63..cust
ail

All of the entities on my system are listed on the server DHCP listings
DHCP status is "not connected"

"yes" is the result of the registry edit that you suggested
RASS is turned off as you suggested

Because I cannot communicate well with the server, I cannit easily post
directly the results of ipconfig

I am logged on to the server as ADMINISTRATOR - When I hit the AD button, I
get "Config info not available login attempt failed"

I am having difficulty responding to your postings because my login attempts
usually fail, I get "page not available" in response to my login attempts, so
I can read your response but not reply. I am looking at this from MS web
site.

What did you find in the registry with the value of Yes?

Is RRAS configured and running? Check using: Start/Admin Tools Routing and
remote access. If it is runing, right-click, disable.

Acccording to http://en.utrace.de/whois/26.28.193.9, that IP range belongs
to a company in Ohio.

When you tried to disjoin it, did you supply the credentials for the AD
admin account?

How are you trying to ping WS1? By single name or FQDN? Does a record exist
in DNS for WS1?

What DNS addresses are the client machines using? Can you post an unedited
ipconfig a/ll from two of your clients, please? Run the command as the
following example. It will put it into a text file, that you can copy and
paste into your reply.

ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt

Hello jamescf,

Is you subnet mask on the server also 255.255.255.0 or still 225.225.225.0?
You didn't react on the posting from Paul.

Hello jamescf,

On the client remove the DG 192.168.1.1 from the DNS server list. Do only
use domain internal DNS server, that is the DC/DNS server. Disable or NOT
use the rotuer for DNS in any case.

James,

On the domain controller, please disable WINS proxy. It's not needed in your
scenario. You can do that in the registry:

To disable wins proxy, go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters,
And change the Default Value to 0:
Value Name: EnableProxy
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Values: Boolean (0 or 1)
Default: 0

Also, a possible Single Label Name AD domain?
I'm a little confused on the differences with the Primary DNS Suffix and the
Search suffix. The Primary DNS Suffix on a DC must match two things: the AD
DNS domain name it is a domain controller for, and the zone name in DNS that
it will register into. I see the zone is called "custail.local" however, for
the DNS Suffix Search List, which shows the suffix of the machine, and below
that, the derived parent suffix(es). However, it will not show a TLD (top
level domain name such as 'local,' 'net,' etc). That means if the zone is
called 'custail.local,' the 'local' portion is the TLD, so it shouldn't show
up as a parent suffix. In the server's case, it appears that a parent suffix
of "custail" is in the list. This is hinting at the AD domain name possibly
being a single lable name.

With that in mind, we need to take a closer look to at least eliminate that
possibility. If you can run the following commands, it would help to
understand your configuration better. These tools are available by
installing the Support Tools (they are on the Windows CDROM under a folder
called Support Tools).

dcdiag /v /fix > c:\dcdiag.txt
netdiag /v /fix > c:\netdiag.txt
dnscmd /enumzones > c:\zonenames.txt
dnscmd /zoneprint custail.local > c:\custail-local.txt
dnscmd /zoneprint custail > c:\custail.txt

When you try to open Active Dir Users and Computers, does it show the domain
name it is trying to connect to?

Thanks,

Ace
