Fully patched Vista - I can reproduce every time.

When I attempt to move files by dragging from one folder to the next
within Explorer, it crashes.

Anyone else seen this?

thanks.

Explorer in Vista is about as robust as a boiled noodle. It will freeze up
under a variety of circumstances and is easily corrupted. To be fair this
has always been in the case in Win9.x but it seems worse in Vista. On the
plus side Vista is able to recover from some Explorer failures without
having to reboot.
First  run the chkdsk command from a command prompt that you run as an
administrator. You may not be able to move files if there is a problem with
the file system itself.
Google chkdsk vista to get detailed instructions.
If this does not fix your problem I would also try installing or
reinstalling the latest video drivers.
I would also run Virus and malware scans even if the problem is fixed.

chkdsk says no problems.

Re-install video drivers for problem moving files within explorer?
Sounds like a crap shoot to me.

So... you're telling the OP that you had the same problem and that it
was "fixed" (translation: ignored) by installing Xplorer2 Lite, right?

What's the fault data for that crash from the Problem Reports and Solutions

Dumb question(s), but: are you able to right-click on items within each
folder?
Any particular class/type of content that's being moved?
Where is this move from/to?

I get this error 100% of the time when I try to copy or move files in
Explorer. (I mean, who would ever need to do that?!) The process does
not continue in the background and will hang forever. The files that
were being copied or moved become tombstones and I cannot delete or open
them unless I boot in Safe mode.
In order to move files on my Vista machine, I have to map to it with a
XP machine and move the files from the XP Explorer. My Vista machine is
patched to SP2, fully updated, latest drivers and new BIOS. I
reinstalled with a clean Vista and its just the same. Any clues?

Reformat the hard drive before reinstalling?

If you did, then you might want to consider taking a look at your hard
drive's health. Check the manufacturer's web site for their hard drive
testing program.

Might also want to check your BIOS manufacturer's site to see if there
have been any buglets reported with a flash upgrade.

Ye, the drive was re-partitioned and formatted. The machine with the
same BIOS absolutely flew with XP installed, no faults. I'm convinced
this is a Vista, not a hardware problem, especially as Google finds this
problem 1000's of times.

Try running the Memory Diagnostic Tool. Start orb and type in memory... it
should popup on the top of the list.

Mostly I am moving mp3's or avi's, so anywhere from a few KB to up to
1GB. I used to use this machine (750GB hard drive) as my home backup
system, but I can't do this anymore now that Explorer is non-functional.
I just booted up the old drive with XP and it works perfectly. Maybe
the solution is that I have to return to XP until Win7 is out?

I agree with whoever said run the memory test. If memory has been added
to a machine it's easy to run into a situation where the specs are
"Correct" but the chips don't really "Like" each other due to
manufacturing variables. Example safest way to go from 1GB original to
4GB is to remove all original and install 4GB all bought same place /
same time.

As you can copy/move in safe mode it may be a troublesome Explorer shell
extension loaded by some third-party software.
Have a look at ShellExView from Nirsoft.
You can disable Explorer shell extensions one by one, (it's a free program).

OK, I've run every hardware diagnostics program I can find, including
onboard, RAM and hard drive health. I upgraded the firmware on the
drive, then reinstalled Vista. Exact same problem straightaway, with
nothing installed. Formatted yet again and put XP back on the machine.
Once again no problems at all - machine flies and no crashes or hangs. I
will just stay with XP until Win 7 is released. Thanks for your
assistance.
