Ok, i have started the wizard. Picked the following options while in
the wizard:

Choose to create forward and reverse lookup zones > Next > Yes, create
a forward lookup zones now > Next > Select Prim Zone > Next > To all
DC's in the AD domain <internaldomainname>.local > Next

Now it ask me what is the name of the new zone? Must i put there
internaldomain.local so that is exactly the same as the old server or
can i choose anything as the name?

Thanks for the help so far

Hi all

Apologies for posting in more than 1 group as i do not know which
group is the ideal one to post in

I'm decominishning my old exchange 2003 box. I have transferred
all the mailboxes. The old box is the internal DNS server of the
company. Any of you know of any good links that i can follow to
make the new box the DNS server before shutting down the old box
please?

Can i follow something like this
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323383 or any of you that know of
better links please?

Thx for the help

Did you run rsop.msc to see applied policies?
This is not the same gpedit.msc, gpedit.msc configures policies that are
applied locally. Rsop.msc is a read only interface that allows you to read
what policies are applied, and what GPO they are applied from.

PostPosted: Wed Feb 18, 2009 7:10 pm    Post subject: Re: System 2221 Error Mapping Drive Reply with quote

HELLO ALL,

I FOUND A TRUE SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM (NOT A WORKAROUND).[/B]
HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE RELEVANT FOR OTHERS EXPERIENCING THIS FRUSTRATING,
NEARLY INEXPLICABLE PROBLEM. (I KNOW THE THREAD IS OLD.)

*I HAD THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS:

1. On ONE workstation only, the user logged in and received [B]System
Error 2221* while a logon script tried to map a drive using the remote
system name and share. This problem did NOT happen at other
workstations when used with the same user account and logon script.

2. If an administrator account was used at the "faulty" workstation,
the share would map perfectly.

3. Alternatively providing an IP address and share name in place of
the remote system name and share name successfully mapped the drive at
the "faulty" workstation.

The answer... tada...

I was unaware of an obsolete set of credentials saved in the *STORED
USER NAMES AND PASSWORDS* applet. It was overriding the expected login
script (default) credentials. To access this applet and delete the
offending credentials, go to *Control Panel > User Accounts > Advanced
(tab) > Manage Passwords (button).*

In all fairness to previous posts, this was a really tough problem to
find because the errors were very subtle, but I did get the feeling the
credentials were being overridden _somewhere._

Enjoy!

Why not use DHCP configured automatically instead of manually entering
an IP for your DNS server? Because I'm not certain but I don't think
VPN's allow or have the option of a DNS server.

Hi. You're posting to a stale/old thread and there's no context for your
answer. Instead of using the icky Techarena copies of these newsgroups, use
a news client, such as Forte Agent, Thunderbird, or even Outlook Express.
It's a lot easier to do nearly everything that way. You can mark messages to

I think that TechArena keeps the posts forever, and when someone else reads
them and believes they may have something to offer and decides to respond,
they may be failing to look at the originally posted date.

You never know, the original post could have been posted back in 2003. Time

I was wondering if you ever found a resolution to this. I have a very
similar problem.

I have 4 DNS servers, AD Integrated on one I get a clean DCdiag
/test:DNS result, yet on three of them I don't. I get errors like this:

IP address: 10.80.1.222
DNS servers:
Warning: 10.80.1.222 (<name unavailable>) [Invalid]
Warning: 10.81.1.222 (<name unavailable>) [Invalid]
Error: all DNS servers are invalid
The A record for this DC was found

and

TEST: Records registration (RReg)
Error: Record registrations cannot be found for all the
network adapters

and

DNS server: 192.112.36.4 (g.root-servers.net.)
1 test failure on this DNS server
This is not a valid DNS server. PTR record query for the
1.0.0.12
7.in-addr.arpa. failed on the DNS server 192.112.36.4
[Error details: 9002 (Type: Win32 - Description: DNS
server failure.)]

However DNS seems to be working just fine.

In news:tokyo7.3ulnna@DoNotSpam.com,
tokyo7 <tokyo7.3ulnna@DoNotSpam.com>, posted the following, which I replied to down below...: Hello tokyo7
Quote:
SCENARIO:

I HAVE 4 AD INTEGRATED DNS SERVERS ALL CONFIGURED THE SAME, NO
FORWARDERS CONFIGURED, ROOT HINTS ARE GOOD ( I VERIFIED THEM). BOTH
MONITORING TESTS SHOW PASS. SECURE ONLY DYNAMIC UPDATES. SCAVENGING
SET TO 4 DAYS.

I HAVE REVERSE LOOKUP ZONES FOR 127.X.X.X AND 10.X.X.X AND
172.17.X.X.X.

I HAVE THE LATEST DCDIAG FROM THE SUPPORT TOOLS. ON 3 OF THE 4 DNS
SERVERS DCDIAG GETS ERRORS SUCH AS THIS:

------------------------------------------------------------------
[snipped]

I HAVE A SUSPICIAN THAT THIS TEST:

Adapter [00000007] Intel(R) PRO/1000 EB Network Connection with I/O
Acceleration:
MAC address is 00:04:23:DE:5F:76
IP address is static
IP address: 10.80.1.222
DNS servers:
Warning: 10.80.1.222 (<name unavailable>)
[Invalid]
Warning: 10.81.1.222 (<name unavailable>)
[Invalid]

OR

THIS TEST:

TEST: Records registration (RReg)
Error: Record registrations cannot be found for all the
network adapters

IS FAILING AND PERHAPS CAUSING FAILURES WITH THE OTHER TESTS???

[B]In any case the only other errors I receive in the event logs are:

DNS Server Event ID 3000 <--maybe once a day
File Replication Service Event ID 13508 but it is followed by 13509
and replication seems to work fine.

Thanks..any help with this would be GREATLY appreciated.*

Do you have a reverse zone for 10.81.1.222? If so, does 10.81.1.222 have a PTR entry?

On the DCs with the invalid Roots, I suggest to delete the roots hints, and reload them from 4.2.2.2.

Asfor the 13508, which Source name is it? Click on the comments link in the following:
http://eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=13508&source
And for 13509:
http://eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=13509&eventno=418&source=NtFrs&phase=1

These events say there is a replication problem.

Event ID 13508 and 13509 I have not seen since yesterday. In any case
they are a separate issue and I believe I resolved this by adding a
missing glue record for the DC in question.

In any case back to the DNS issue at hand......

10.81.1.222 has a PTR entry, as all my DNS servers do. 10.81.1.222 is
the server that tests good with dcdiag /e /test:dns

The others servers test with errors as shown in my earlier post.

I deleted and reloaded the root servers as suggested on one of the DNS
servers (10.9.1.2) and dcdiag /e /test:dns still comes up with the same
errors.

I still think these invalid root server errors are false positives
because of the nslookup tests I showed in my earlier post.

So then does anybody have an idea as to what is causing this, from
dcdiag /e /test:dns:

Adapter [00000007] Intel(R) PRO/1000 EB Network Connection with I/O
Acceleration:
MAC address is 00:04:23:DE:5F:76
IP address is static
IP address: 10.80.1.222
DNS servers:
Warning: 10.80.1.222 (<name unavailable>)
[Invalid]
Warning: 10.81.1.222 (<name unavailable>)
[Invalid]

OR

THIS TEST:

TEST: Records registration (RReg)
Error: Record registrations cannot be found for all the
network adapters

I did a packet capture on a DNS server 10.9.1.2 and behold it really did
go out and ask the root servers

1218 3.331939 10.9.1.2 192.203.230.10 DNS Standard query PTR
1.0.0.127.in-addr.arpa
1238 3.404205 192.203.230.10 10.9.1.2 DNS Standard query response, No
such name

So my assertion that these were false positives was perhaps wrong. I
just don't get why a fresh reload of the root hints did not fix it. Or
why a manual nslookup from command line works, or why I have another DNS
server that the dcdiag test will show a PASS for everything.

Also I even put in the host file a lookup for the IPs of itself and the
other DNS servers just in case and it still failed in this manner:

TEST: Records registration (RReg)
Error: Record registrations cannot be found for all the network
adapters

and

DNS server: 192.112.36.4 (g.root-servers.net.)
1 test failure on this DNS server

Run the following please, and post the results.

nslookup d2
(post results)

then while in batch mode, enter 192.203.230.10, and post that result too, please.

I know you said you do not use Forwarders. In many cases, using Forwarders are suggested and some would say using them is 'best practice.' I'm not sure of your company's reasons to not use them, and I respect whatever reason it is, but if I may suggest, configure a forwarder and re-run your tests. Most of these root hint errors, and possibly all, do not occur with Forwarders, for obvious reasons.

I know you want to get it right, but I am suggesting to use Forwarders to get these errors out of the way, because they may be tainting other possible errors going on. I know you said that the 13508 and 13509 errors are now gone, but my curiosity is getting the best of me because these errors do not just pop up and disappear for no reason. I would like to know, and I'm sure you are curious as the administrator of your AD infrastructure, that if you eliminate these Root hint errors, I would like to know if there are any other errors going on concerning replication, which is a more serious issue.

And I am very surprised there was no glue record for one of your DC DNS servers, which is more of an idication that there is a replication issue that initially caused this, because these records, as well as everything else, automatically get registered without manual intervention.

Also, I know you said you have the latests dcdiag and netdiags versions. Curious, when you ran the tests, did you run them from one machine, or on each DC? Can you compare the versions on each DC to see if there are any discrepancies?

Here is the link for the latest. Try installing the tools on one DC and compare the versions:
Download and install the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 32-bit Support Tools
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=96A35011-FD83-419D-939B-9A772EA2DF90&displaylang=en#filelist

Also, in your edge firewalls, assuming you have more than one, do you have EDNS0 enabled?

Hi,

Does no one know what happened?

Quote:
Hi,

I had one tio.nl zone internaly with two sub domains for staff and
student. The student part was not aWindows domain yet, the staff domain
and tio.nl domain were already windows domains.

Today I created the student.tio.nl Windows domain using dcpromo on a
Windows 2008 server. To my amazement the installation killed my
student.tio.nl domain in the original tio.nl zone and created a link to a
new student.tio.nl zone hosted on the new Windows 2008 server.

Was this because I finally agreed the have the new server also becoming a
dns server?
I wanted this as I am going to transfer all dns servers to the new domein
later this year.
I don't even realy mind it being a new zone as it will be hosted on the
same dns servers but... I have lost all information in the old
student.tio.nl domain. Sad The new zone on the new dns server did NOT
transfer the information so for instance all MX records etc are gone.

As I am fully aware of what zones, domains, etc are both in dns and in
Windows I was highly surprised when this happened. I have read every
screen carefully before agreeing to the setup.
I am a both a Win2k and 2k3 MCSE and studying for 2k8.
Of course in my study/testing I did not have a 2/3 operational network
with Windows 2003 servers where I needed to add one new domain with a
Win2k8 server. :-(

1) Can I simply undo what was done and get the old dns zone information
about the student.tio.nl domain in the original zone back?
All zones are AD integrated. The are no files in the
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dns\backup directory
2) Which option did I select that made the Win2k8 dcpromo command kill the
original zone?

1. You would have to perform a restore on one of your domain controllers
(of the DNS tree, depending on which replication scope you had set).

No other record of it exists (allowing you to avoid the restore)?

Setup creating the delegation would have done a good job of trashing it
in the meantime.

2. Hmm I forget if it even asks you. I was moderately sure there was an
advanced / "leave DNS alone, I'll do it myself" option.

If you have the DCPromo do it all for you it does tend to run roughshod
over everything you might have put in place yourself.

I'm not sure if this post is still being watched but I am having a
similar issue however it is not between a child and parent in a domain,
it is between domain controllers in the same domain. In DNS on one of
my DCs exists all of the records however in DNS on the other DCs,
nothing exists. The one missing items in DNS on the server that has the
zones is the DomainDNSZones folder. I have attempted the steps
suggested above but to no avail: "a delegation on the forest root domain
for the child domain on the root domain DNS server. Once I did that, and
selected 'Create Default Application Directory Partitions' on my child
domain DNS server". The DomainDNSZones partition is still not showing
up. Any suggestions?

This suggests replication failure. Creating the application partitions
should not be necessary if they exist on a current DC within the domain.

Check replication with RepAdmin, DCDiag and the contents of the
Directory Service event log?

A possible alternative is that you have two copies of the same zone.
However, that should be logging an event stating that in the DNS event
log. I would expect the two zones to be in different directory partions
(normally one in the domain NC and one in Domain / Forest DNS Zones). I
feel that's quite unlikely here, but would need more information.

I definately have errors in the Directory Service event log - two of
them that continually repeats.
Event 1645 - Active Directory did not perform an authenticated remote
procedure call (RPC) to another domain controller because the desired
service principal name (SPN) for the destination domain controller is
not registered on the Key Distribution Center (IKDC) domain controller
that resolves the SPN.

Event 1925 - The attempt to establish a replication link for the
follwoing writable directory parition failed.
Additional Data
Error value: 1396 Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect.

I have done a ton of research on these errors and I have yet to find
anything to resolve this issue. I'm hoping you can help.

Running repadmin /showrepl produces various errors also:
1) Logon Failure: The taget account name is incorrect.
2) Warning: KCC could not add this REPLICA LINK due to error.
3) The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup
failure.

I have run dcdiag and receive the following error:
Starting test: FSMOCheck
Warning: DcGet DCNameM<GC_SERVER_REQUIRED> call failed, error 1355
A Global Catalog server could not be located - All GC's are down
.................................hbrapp.hbr-inc.com failed test
FsmoCheck.

Thanks.

This sounds like it could be a DNS misconfig issue. Can you post an unedited ipconfig /all of the two DCs, please? Let us eliminate the possibility it's a simple DNS misconfig to start off, as well as other issues that an ipconfig /all result will alert us to (single label name, disjointed namespace, multihomed DCs, ISP DNS, external DNS, router as a DNS, and much more).

Also, Chris mentioned a possible duplicate zone, which I am leaning towards as well. I have a full outlined procedure to check and fix such an issue, but let's rule out the basics with the ipconfigs, please.

Thanks,
