I'm getting an error message when launching Sony Vegas Pro 9.0, saying
that this is corrupt or missing. I see different versions on my
computer, and one person had success in making them all the same
version. But when I try copying one to the c:/windows folder, after a
few seconds it changes back to the old one. What do I need to do to
prevent that? My thought is that's the one I should change, as the
other ones are newer and in the Scanner's folder, so I figure are the
correct ones to use.
Or, any other suggestions as to what's going on with Sony Vegas giving
this error and not launching? Another person posted on several sites
that she resolved it by changing the WIA service from Auto to Manual,
but I tried that, to no avail.

The twain_32.dll is a Windows Protected File. Windows knows what it
should look like and will want to replace it quickly and silently
(with an event in the Event Log) if it come up missing or is replaced
with some other version, so the behavior is normal. If you just
simply delete it for example, Windows will replace it with the one
from the dllcache folder.

Do you see other versions of the twain_32.dll file or do you see
copies of it in other places? Do you have a version that you know
works, but Windows won't let you replace it in the Windows folder?

Of course, if you think you have a .dll that you know is correct you
can tell Windows that your version is the correct version and not to
pay attention to the change in that particular file, but that would be
over riding a built in protection mechanism. Sometimes you have to do
this for things like video drivers or .dlls that are more up to date
than what Windows might think, but you need to be sure you understand
what you are doing, if it really needs to be done and how to back out
the change if other things do not work anymore.

You can do some Google searching to see how other people have resolved
what sounds like a similar issue. Search for:

twain_32.dll vegas

You will see what other people have done. I did not follow the
stories to see if they came out with happy endings or not.

If you are 100% sure you want to use some other twain_32.dll file,
that can be easily arranged.

I have different versions; one in /windows, one in , and another in
the three different scanner folders. As I said, I presume the scanner
one was the best one, being put in by my scanner (which I again
presume is what Sony Vegas will need to use), and hence that's the one
I want to use in /windows. Could you/someone clarify what else this
driver does for Windows in general, that it doesn't want me replacing
it with another version? I'll try the reverse, of putting the older
windows version in the scanner folders, but didn't think that was
preferable. And you said I could get windows to accept a different
version. Any help as to how I would do that (unless the above answer
is it will mess up windows too badly)?

I did search for what others had done, and my OP referenced the two
ways others have resolved it: the one didn't work (changing the WIA
service), and the other was to do what I'm trying to do, which is make
all versions the same.

Forgot to put in where the third version is: in
C:\windows\softwaredistribution\Download\dd9ab519350148....\
