The original post you're replying to was started three and a half years ago,
and the thread itself has been untouched for two years. Hopefully the
original poster isn't still waiting for answers, and won't therefore have to
try to comprehend your "I don't know about the but anynr have the problem

WHOOP it worked for me! thanks katy pluta. on vista i didn't even need
to navigate to all users, because when i clicked "explore" on start
button, the only file that shored up was the prgrams file. and when i
clicked on it like 5 folders popped up. I pushed "organize in the upper
left hand corner, added another folder (named Age of Empires III), and
it worked

Thanks. It doesn't work for me.
The only change I have is that I don't have the msxmla.dll - at all.
Any idea why don't I have it?

I am trying to play an older game on Windows XP. I am aware of the
"Compatibility" mode, and when i use it, only the error seems to
change. The error w/o compatibility does the following:

Without Compatibility Mode turned on:
1. I try to install the game thru it's install window it pops up.
2. The game "install wizard" pops up, but instead of installing the
game, it tries to install a driver called "SoundMAX WMD Driver".
3. It says it cannot find the driver, and tells me to restart the pc/
or boot it.

With Compatibility Mode turned on:
1. I try to install the game thru it's install window it auto-run
pops up.
2. The game tries to install, but instead of the game installing, it
triest to install a driver called "SoundMAX WMD Driver."
3. The error says im missing the file avg_dll (or one of it's
componenets).
Then it says to download the missing files or libraries it needs.

Im no computer nerd, nor do i have no clue what is going on here.
All i know is i could play older games before on xp without problems,
now i got this problem. I do know how to check this driver, and i
think i have the most current one avaiable for my PC. It also
specifies in the "driver portfolio" that this device is "working
properly".

Here is my OS also:

OS: XP SP 3 (1.69 GHZ Pentium 4)
Video: Nvidia Ge6200
RAM: 1 gig
Memory: more than 70 gigs
Sound: SoundMAX Integrated Digital Sound

Game Requirements:

OS: Win 98/200 (225 Mhz Processor)
Ram: 225 MB
Video: Nividia 3000 or higher
Memory: 300 MB
Keyboard and mouse

Now the game requires less than i got, but considering the game is
from 1999, it should theoretically work.
Note that on www.gamefaqs.com, people tell me it works fine on xp,
yet i am having this problem. Please HELP!

I don't see the relevance of the game name, but it is called
"Sepeterra Core"
I already asked people at www.gamefaqs.com, and most say this game
does work on windows xp, so this error must be mine only. Also, i
noticed after i tried installing this game again, it corrupted my
sound drivers. I had to uninstall and re-install them. My sound driver
is fine again, but im afraid of re-trying to install this game again.
And if your wondering, the company that made this game is no longer in
existance. If your gonna ask me to ask them...too bad, they no longer
exist. So im stuck asking on this board or www.gamefaqs.com

That should be WDM, not WMD.

That should be Septerra Core. (Septerra = 7th Earth [7 continents])

Click Start, click Run, type or paste next line and press Enter:

Version 1.04 is supposed to be compatible with Windows XP.
It is available at the official website:

I tried installing the game, but i still get this error:

"SoundMAX WDM is not installed. Please re-install it."

I looked in the system32/driver folder. I did not find the SoundMAX
driver in that folder. Instead, it is located in a folder called
C:/I386. There seems to be alot of drivers found in that folder.

I tried running dxdiag and got clean reports that everything is working
up to snuff. If you want to see it's log, i can paste on here after your
response.

I tried installing the patch and it gives me this error:

"Fatal error-version 1.04
Septerra Core is not installed.
Please install Septerra Core."

I imagine since the game won't properly install, the patch won't be able
to "find" the game found on my pc. I think the answers in the FAQ and
the other info for Windows XP only if you can actually install the game
itself on your pc. I don't think it has relevence with my problem.
I tried looking at the FAQ page on the website, but it does not give me
any tips about my particular problem.
I really appreciate the help you given me, but i have no clue what to
do next. Sorry about the earlier post too. That is my frustration
showing. I try not to show it much in other posts.

OK, no sweat about past messages. (Water under the bridge... :)

I do not need to see the dxdiag report, since it came up clean.

If the SoundMAX driver is not in system32, you need to uninstall and
reinstall it as you did before. Leave the C:\i386 folder copy there.

Here are some other things to check:

I got looking more carefully. Looks like our driver versions are different.
My driver version is:

5.12.1.3513
and the date it is from is:

7/8/2002

But i think that was the latest driver that is actually compatible with this
particular PC. Yes, it is about 7 year old PC, but should i update the driver
to your version of it? I did try to use the update driver from windows, but
it says i have latest driver. Any suggestions?

think i have the most current one avaiable for my PC. It also
specifies in the "driver portfolio" that this device is "working
properly".

Here is my OS also:

OS: XP SP 3 (1.69 GHZ Pentium 4)
Video: Nvidia Ge6200
RAM: 1 gig
Memory: more than 70 gigs
Sound: SoundMAX Integrated Digital Sound

Game Requirements:

OS: Win 98/200 (225 Mhz Processor)
Ram: 225 MB
Video: Nividia 3000 or higher
Memory: 300 MB
Keyboard and mouse

Now the game requires less than i got, but considering the game is
from 1999, it should theoretically work.
Note that on www.gamefaqs.com, people tell me it works fine on xp,
yet i am having this problem. Please HELP!

I don't see the relevance of the game name, but it is called
"Sepeterra Core"
I already asked people at www.gamefaqs.com, and most say this game
does work on windows xp, so this error must be mine only. Also, i
noticed after i tried installing this game again, it corrupted my
sound drivers. I had to uninstall and re-install them. My sound driver
is fine again, but im afraid of re-trying to install this game again.
And if your wondering, the company that made this game is no longer in
existance. If your gonna ask me to ask them...too bad, they no longer
exist. So im stuck asking on this board or www.gamefaqs.com

it tries to install a driver called "SoundMAX WMD Driver".

That should be WDM, not WMD.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\SMWDM.SYS

"Sepeterra Core"

That should be Septerra Core. (Septerra = 7th Earth [7 continents])

Septerra Core - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Septerra_Core

Click Start, click Run, type or paste next line and press Enter:
DXDIAG

Use that diagnostic to insure that your system is working properly.
(If you change anything, take notes so you can undo mistakes. :)

Version 1.04 is supposed to be compatible with Windows XP.
It is available at the official website:
http://valkyriestudios.com/Septerra

On that index page, hold shift key and click fsa.htm for answers to
frequently asked questions about Septerra. Right click and click Save
Target As, to save Septerra104.zip to disk, etc.

(You're welcome. Smile

Umm sounds good. Sorry about the other post. I was really getting
frustrated trying to get this game to work. I actually tried using the
1.4 patch, but i try it again. If it works, i come back and say this
post was helpful. If not, i be back on here again. Anyways, thanks for
the help. I try this out.

Start> Run> msinfo32
expand Components, click Sound Device, Ctrl+A SelectAll, Ctrl+C Copy
(post that info back here)

Start> Run> control mmsys.cpl
In Sounds and Audio Devices Properties
SoundMAX Digital Audio
click Hardware (tab)
click SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio, click Properties (button)
In SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio Properties, click Driver (tab)

Compare yours with the following from Mine:

Besides "Septerra104.zip" from the website, did you also try:
autosc102.exe 06-Jan-2004 14:33 1.2M
patch2.txt 06-Jan-2004 14:33 20k
sc102.exe 06-Jan-2004 14:33 288k

I do not have any other ideas on things to check.

HTH. (Hope This Helps. Smile

But i think that was the latest driver that is actually compatible with this
particular PC. Yes, it is about 7 year old PC, but should i update the driver
to your version of it? I did try to use the update driver from windows, but
it says i have latest driver. Any suggestions?

See if you can find a later driver at a Soundmax website. Windows may
not be aware of newer drivers. I went looking for a Soundmax website,
and eventually found one, but it was a bit harder than I expected. I've
forgotten where it was, though, as my integrated Soundmax audio "card"
is my secondary soundcard, and I found/fixed my problem before needing
to update my drivers. (my problem was plugging my microphone into
Line-in instead of Microphone).

Good luck.
